The Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre is holding its annual “Walking Lightly
on the Environment Contest” in celebration of Waste Reduction Week - October 15th
to 21st, 2007. We would like to invite your class to participate. Winning Coloring
Pages and Drawings will appear in the annual OVWRC Environmental Calendar;
winning Environment Radio Ads will air on local radio stations and the winning
mural design will be painted on a wall at the OVWRC.
Participating in the Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre’s “Walking Lightly on the
Environment Contest” is a great opportunity for teachers to encourage participation
in waste reduction, reuse, recycling and composting programs!

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Attached, please find instructions for different activities for various grade levels.
2. Please choose the appropriate activity for your grade.
3. Fill in the activity form with your name, school and grade; then photocopy the form for
each student in your class.
4. Have each student write their name clearly on their entry.
5. Complete a Contest Entry Form for your class.
6. Mail or deliver your package to the Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre.

Coloring Contest Grades P - 1
Description
Students in Grades P-1 are invited to color ONE of the pages supplied. We also ask that the
students write an answer to the mascot’s question.
Materials: Markers, crayons, paints or colored pencils can be used.
Guidelines:
1. Photocopy the coloring page(s) for your class - only one entry per student.
2. Complete a Contest Entry Form for your class
3. Mail or deliver your package to the Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre.
(Please ensure that the student’s name appears on their entry.)

Drawing Contest Grades 2 - 5
Description
Students in Grades 2 - 5 are invited to submit one drawing illustrating why we should recycle and/
or compost. Some suggestions:
A world without recycling What I put in my Triple R Can
What I put in my blue box What I put in my Green Cart

Environmental Radio Ad Grades 6 - 9
Description
Students in Grades 6 - 9 are invited to submit a script for a 30 second environmental radio ad. This
ad should focus on one or all aspects of reducing, reusing, recycling and composting. Waste
management tools such as the Yellow Triple R Can, Blue Box and Green Cart can be referred to in
the ad. The winning ad will be recorded by the student(s)/class and air on MyFM and/or Star96.
The OVWRC will arrange for the transportation to and from the recording studio.
Guidelines:
1. This can be a student, group or class project.
2. Photocopy the Environmental Radio Ad Form for your class - only one entry per student.
3. Complete a Contest Entry Form for your class.
4. Mail or deliver your package to the Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre.

Design a Mural Grades 10 - 12
Description
Design an environmental mural that can be painted on a 10 foot x 8 foot wall at the Ottawa Valley
Waste Recovery Centre (OVWRC). The theme of this mural should represent the OVWRC’s
recycling and composting programs and may include our mascots: Toby the Triple R Can, Blue
Box Betty and Curby the Green Cart.
The OVWRC will supply the materials needed for painting the mural, transportation for students to/
from the Centre and lunch & snacks.
Guidelines:
1. This can be a student, group or class project.
2. Photocopy the Design a Mural Entry Form for your class - only one entry per student.
3. Complete a Contest Entry Form for your class.
4. Mail or deliver your package to the Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre.
(Please ensure that the student’s name appears on their entry.)
